The book was banned when it was barely sexual or romantic, so how was Hall supposed to write a bubbly romantic comedy? Extraordinary Women was written by a man, Compton Mackenzie, and published in the same year, Extraordinary Women was a bubbly romantic comedy, about a lesbian colony on Capri called something else in the novel, but there was a lesbian colony there and the writer and his wife also used to vacation there. One woman ends up back with a male partner and another one has not taken herself seriously enough and gets disinherited while she parties, but it is frothy fun. I honestly don't know how much lesbians would like the story.

Rather than celebrating the novel as a wholly positive work, which it decidedly is not, I explore the ways in which a satire of lesbianism offers a new dimension of understanding when it comes to exploring the emergence of a coherent literary lesbian identity. With characters that mirror other stock figures in lesbian literature the mannish lesbian, the poor young woman seduced to a life of sin and sexual debauchery, the wanton sexual deviant , it becomes clear that the novel may be read as an important precursor to other novels that follow, both in the characters it creates and in the questions of identity that the narrative struggles to answer. Although work on this novel is far from exhausted, this thesis may be read as the beginning to spur further critical work on the novel, and as a call for other critics to take seriously a novel that has been often overlooked but may yet be an object of fruitful study, both through the lens of women, gender, and sexuality studies, and in other fields. Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie West Hartlepool Edinburgh was a Scottish writer , belonging to a theatrical family of Mackenzies, many of whose members used Compton as their stage surname. Father Edward, in fact, was a Shakespearean actor and playmaker, sister Fay a noted actress, while his nephew Anthony Pellisier was a film director. Strenuous defender of Scottish autonomy and co-founder of the Scottish National Party, Sir Compton Mackenzie was the author of about one hundred works of different genres, including the commemorations of Whiskey Galore and Monarch of The Glen , and the novel The Four Winds of Love , perhaps his most successful work. The passion of Mackenzie for Capri was born by looking at some of the old prints of the island.
